America Gives Thanks

I got America Gives Thanks hoping for a fun children’s picture book and ended up with something that made me pause and reflect. The story follows a school field trip to Washington, D.C., with the main character, America, and their classmates, and it uses the trip, and the kids’ complaints, as a teaching moment about speaking up, history, and how change happens.
What I appreciated most: the book doesn’t shy away from showing that complaining isn’t always negative, when used purposefully it can be a force for good. Visually, the artwork by Thai My Phuong is warm and inviting, with muted tones and friendly faces, which I think makes the somewhat lofty message feel accessible for young readers.
I think that this is a thoughtful pick for elementary-aged kids especially in a classroom or family setting when discussing civics, voice, or history. I really liked how it left me feeling hopeful that even young voices matter.
